What is The MET Gala?
The MET Gala is a charity event held every spring at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York – and it always marks one of the most exciting fashion events of the year, filled with celebrities.

The 2024 Met Gala will return on Monday 6 May in New York with the title "Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion" for its annual celebration of the Costume Institute's upcoming exhibition. According to the museum's announcement, the exhibition will showcase 250 historically significant garments, referred to as 'sleeping beauties,' too fragile and sensitive to be worn again. The collection will feature original designs from renowned fashion creators such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hubert de Givenchy.
"Fashion is one of the most emotional artistic forms because of its connection to the body," said Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute. "It is imbued with memory and emotions, and we relate to it very much via our senses. One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion."
The MET Gala is often dubbed the "Oscars of fashion" as the event attracts the biggest A-list names, dressing according to a set theme, aligning with the world's most influential fashion designers. In previous years, guests have embraced themes like "punk" and "camp," paying tribute to specific designers such as Alexander McQueen, Rei Kawakubo, and most recently, Karl Lagerfeld.

The theme of the exhibition "Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion" will not only focus on the history of fashion by presenting some of the most beautiful archival designs but will also pay 'hommage' to nature and how it has been reflected in certain materials, inspiring the design process. Through this, the exhibition will emphasize the need for sustainability in fashion. "It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion," said Bolton, revealing that the exhibition will be structured around three zones: land, sea, and sky. Each will symbolize the materials used to create the garments within it.
Approximately 250 items will be on display in the museum, including many never-before-seen pieces. One of the most fragile is considered an Elizabethan bodice and a silk satin ball gown from 1877 designed by American couturier Charles Frederick Worth. According to a press release, the MET will use video animation, light projection, soundscaping, AI, and CGI to "weave a contextual fabric of understanding around each piece."
